Trip program
D1: Meet in Kathmandu, hotel.
D2: Bus drive to Dumre (7h) and then to Utipur by 4x4 or truck (650m).
D3: Utipur-Bhulbhule (950m) (6h).
We hike along the Marsyangdi river, enveloped by the exceptional Annapurna and Manaslu high ranges. We cross a vast area of rice fields with a view over Himalchuli (7893m) and Lamjung Himal (6983m).
D4: Bhulbhune-Syange (1450m) (6h).
The vegetation changes as we move from sub-tropical to temperate climate and the traffic of local people is a constant presence along the way.
D5: Syange-Thal (1675m) (5h30). We continue along the Marsyangdi river which we cross on suspended bridges here and there. We hike admiring the green rice fields and finally pass by huge cliffs when approaching Thal, the first village in Manang district of Tibetan culture. We will notice the prayer flags and the chortens - the typical budhist religious monuments.
D6: Thal-Chame (2700m) (6h). The landscape becomes alpine and we hike surrounded by the superb panorama all around us of very high mountains. After a wide valley we cross Dharapani, a village of Tibetan type. Chame has two hot water springs.
D7: Chame-Pisang (3300m) (6h). We continue through a dense forest, crossing two suspended bridges and the long Nyeshang valley with lots of prayer flags and a stone wall with engraved prayers.
D8: Pisang-Manang (3650m) (5h). We
trek through typical hamlets where people raise yaks for
butter and cheese and find a few small budhist monasteries along
the way.
D9: Manang. Rest day for altitude adaptation. You can visit Braga or Khangsar, two hidden villages some hours away.
D10: Manang-Churi Lattar (3900m)
(4h).
We cross the village of Tinke then traverse the Khola river climbing
gently through pasture land. We see at distance the high pass
we shall climb tomorrow.
We cross the Kenzan river before reaching our overnight shelter.
D11: Churi Lattar-Thorungphedi (4400m)
(6h30). We hike towards an amazing waterfall formed by the waters
of the Gangapurna (7455m) glacier. We are likely to cross
yak or horse caravans heading for Muktinath or Jomosom.
We continue following the slopes that fall into the Marshyangdi
river which we cross by a covered bridge.
D12: Thorungphedi-Muktinath (3700m) (8h). This is a long journey to cross the col Thorung La (5400m), and descend to Muktinath which has a well known sanctuary. This place is a very important centre for budhist and hindu pilgrimage, as well as a trade point for merchants coming from Tibet.
D13: Muktinath-Dagarjung (3300m) (7h). We start descending by Jharkot and Kagbeni, two mediaeval villages, with a beautiful view over the Nilgiri peaks (7061m). We are very close to Lho Mantang, the capital of the legendary kingdom of Mustang.
D14: Dagarjung-Marpha (2760m) (5h). We cross Jomosom (2713m), the important area administrative centre. The vegetation turns green again and we reach Marpha located behind a cliff that protects it from the high winds.
D15: Marpha-Lete (2650m) (5h30). Excellent view over Dhaulagiri (8172m) as we enter the first rice fields and forests in contrast with the desertic vegetation of the preceding journeys.
D16: Lete-Tatopani (1300m) (6h). We descend along river Kali Gandaki. Great waterfall in Nupse. In Tatopani we can bath in the hot water springs.
D17: Tatopani-Gorepani (2800m) (7h).
Long and difficult ascent to Gorepani following the caravan trail from Tibet to Pokhara.
D18: Gorepani-Birethanti (1100m) (5h30). Descent to Ulleri with beatiful view over Annapurna South (7200m).
D19: Bus drive to Kathmandu.
D20: End program after breakfast.
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous.
